Hitting the Bullseye: A Journey of Discovery and Purpose

I recently came across an intriguing story that shed light on the essence of hitting the bullseye in life. It revolved around Kobun Chino, a renowned master of kyudo, a Zen Buddhist archery discipline.

This tale resonated deeply with me, highlighting the importance of finding and pursuing our proper targets with unwavering focus and determination.

Picture this: a picturesque hilltop on the mesmerizing Pacific coast of California, a target carefully positioned, and Kobun Chino poised to perform for a group of eager onlookers.

He set himself at a distance that felt right, aimed his bow, and concentrated intensely. Then, with a quick release, the arrows soared through the air, surpassing the target and disappearing into the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean.

"Bullseye!" exclaimed Kobun Chino triumphantly.

At that moment, the genius had hit a target that no one else could see a target far beyond what was conventionally expected.

This profound event surprised me, reminding me that true mastery lies not in hitting the expected mark but in discovering an extraordinary goal that eludes others.

Interestingly, it is worth noting that Kobun Chino served as the Zen teacher for none other than Steve Jobs. This connection added an extra layer of depth to the story, highlighting how influential figures often possess the ability to see beyond what is immediately apparent.

As I reflected on this tale, I couldn't help but draw parallels to my own experiences and those of my clients. Many of them initially believed their target was within reach of their usual aim, ex, a new job title. However, through our collaborative journey, they gradually realized that their goals resided in a completely different realm.

It was a place they had been unconsciously preparing for, accumulating insights and honing skills, without even realizing the possibility of aiming for something of such remarkable calibre.

This process of job reframing, of shifting away from business as usual, emerges as a vital step towards hitting the bullseye in our lives.

It involves embracing a fresh perspective that centres on listening, inspiring, influencing, and collaborating. It transcends the mere act of setting a pace, urging us to be fully present in the current moment. Only then can we glimpse the target that lies beyond, waiting to be discovered.

When we speak of hitting the bullseye, it is essential to recognize that calibre has nothing to do with titles or the number of zeros on a paycheck.

Instead, true success lies in turning off the auto-pilot and embarking on a pursuit fueled by our deepest convictions. It is about making a difference, not only in our own lives but also in the lives of others.

If you find yourself standing at a crossroads, wondering which direction to take, I extend an open invitation for you to reach out.

Together, we can navigate this journey of discovery, finding clarity and purpose in your next step.

Let us embark on the quest for your bullseye, armed with unwavering determination and a profound belief in your ability to create a meaningful impact.
